Finishing

This is it! Next to building your door, finishing it will make the difference between having a hand-crafted piece of gorgeous wood or a flea market beauty.

When your shipment arrives, remember to examine it for shipping related damage within 3 days of receipt.

Before finishing your screen door we recommend you install it (See Installation), then remove it immediately to finish properly. If you fail to finish your door within 15 days of receipt it may warp or crack.

Our screen doors come paint grade ready, if you wish to stain your screen door you may wish to touch up any scratches by sanding with 150 grit then 220 grit sandpaper.

Painting your door requires at least one coat of Enamel primer. And a finish coat of either oil or water based Enamel.

All other interior or exterior paint types are not recommended and will void our warranty.

Staining your screen door only changes the color of the wood. Stains do not seal your door from the elements. The term sealer means the color is steadfast. All un-painted screen doors must be sealed with spar varnish to protect them from the elements.

Marine Grade Spar Varnish is the only finish coat we recommend. All other finishes over raw wood or compatible stains will void our warranty. Spar Varnish can be applied over raw wood or complimentary stains as recommended by the manufacturer. It takes at least two full strength coats to get a good finish you must sand or use steel wool between coats, following the manufacturers recommendations. Hint, use a dry brush on the final coat of spar varnish; being careful not to leave any excess material to run.
