Any set of two wood Screen Doors can become French Doors with the addition of an astragal!
An astragal covers the gap between the two doors, which can help keep out insects and covers the gap between the doors, making your entrance more visually appealing. The astragal is attached to the active door and keeps the inactive door in place. Below is a diagram showing both double entry doors and double screen doors with an astragal.
How do I add the astragal measurement to the door width?
Our astragal is 1/2" thick where it attaches to the length of the door, and a 3/16" gap is configured with the "T" of the astragal at 1-5/16" wide. Overall, there would need to be a total of 11/16" space between the doors for the astragal to be included.
As an example, if your opening was 72" wide you would need to remove space for clearance and fit. We suggest 1/8" on each side. To figure two doors of equal width with an astragal, the math would be:
71.75 - 0.6875 = 71.0625 / 2 = 35.53125
Double Door Width minus Astragal divided by 2 = Individual Door Width
Each door could be ordered at 35-1/2" width.
Our astragal can be used for both inswing and outswing doors, as well as either the left or right door, so that it suits your specific needs. The astragal will not be attached before shipping, so that you can determine which is the inactive door.
The astragal can be fabricated from any species of lumber we offer.
One thing to keep in mind is that you need to be aware of how your hardware with work between your screen door and your entry door. Be sure to carefully measure the distance both your entry hardware and screen door hardware protrude from the door to ensure there is enough space so that they do not hit when both sets of doors are closed.
