Any set of two wood Montana Screen Doors can become French Doors with the addition of an astragal! An astragal covers the gap between the two doors which can help keep out insects and covers the gap between the doors, making your entrance more visually appealing. The astragal is attached to the active door and keeps the inactive door in place.
How to Measure for an Astragal
This can be installed on both inswing and outswing doors as well as either the left or right door so that it suits your specific needs. The astragal is not attached prior to shipping. Our astragal is 1/2" thick where it attaches the length of the door and a 3/16" gap is configured with the "T" of the astragal at 1-5/16" wide. (This leaves 5/16" coverage on the face of each door.) Overall, there would need to be 11/16" space between the doors for the astragal to be included.
EXAMPLE:
Your finished door opening is 72". We suggest leaving 1/8" on either side for hinges and clearrance/fit. This would give you 71-3/4" for both doors and astragal.
( 71-3/4" [OPENING DIMENSION] - 11/16" [ASTRAGAL] ) / 2 = INDIVIDUAL DOOR WIDTH
(71.75 - 0.6875) / 2
(71.0625) / 2 = 35.53125
We would recommend ordering both doors at 35-1/2".
The astragal can be fabricated from any species of lumber we offer.
